Background
Nigeria is a small country located in western Africa. It borders the Gulf of Guinea and is between Benin and Cameroon. It is about twice the size of California! Before it became independent, Britain was in control. Britain seized Nigeria because they were trying to have total control of as much land as possible. When they left, Nigeria was complete chaos. First, the federal prime minister and premiers of the Northern and Western regions were assasinated. Then, the country went into a civil war in 1967 because three eastern states succeeded. The succeeded nations eventually lost and rejoined the country.
Current Affairs
Currently, Nigeria has successfully become a democratic country. It has a president that serves four years and can also serve a second term. It also has a National Assembly, with 109 Senate seats, and 360 House of Representatives seats. Some of the current problems facing Nigeria today are, only half are literate, and it has the largest population of poor people in Africa because they've had a population explosion. They also suffer from corruption like, poor managements of funds, political instability and a horribly run government. There are not many jobs for people when they get out of college, so to survive, they join the internet scam and fraud business (419 business). Three to five million Nigerians have HIV/AIDS. They also suffer from malaria, bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, yellow fever, sleeping sickness, and many more. There are also religious and ethnic tensions between Muslims and Christians. Nigeria's economy is very bad because of the corruption listed before. It is starting to grow again though, and hopefully will become better. It does have the second largest stock exchange in Africa. Their main exports are oil, natural gas, and other petroleum products.
